What
  • A high-speed public access internal IP network for the annual event in Nevada known as Burning Man

Why

  • We just want to enable better communication... what you do with that is up to you.

How

  • The network is built using IEEE 802.11b wireless ethernet technology. This year, we'll be utilizing both Cisco Aironet and Lucent ORiNOCO (WaveLAN) equipment.
  • The root node will reside at Fusion Valley at the 3 o'clock outpost. (Again for 2001)  There will also be repeating access points at center camp and the 9 o'clock outpost. They will all be outfitted with HyperGain 15 dBi omnidirectional antennas.
  • Additional technical details  (PLEASE read this before sending us email)

Status

  • The next trip is scheduled for August 10-12. There we will build the final booth, and do some things for our camp.
  • 27 July 01 - we will build at least one more playanet booth, possibly 2 depending on how much help we get.
  • 04Jul01 - One Playanet booth has been prebuilt
  • 05May01 - Memorial day - test, inventory, and fix up the ol base trailer.

Services

  • Relatively low-level things we'll definitely be providing:  DHCP server  DNS servers (.local TLD? where's the RFC for this?)  Chat via IRC/ICB/WWW

What will be on PlayaNet?

  • BRC map
  • BRC Gazette
  • A messaging service

Connect

  • DSSS 802.11 (not FHSS/WebGear) -- SSID forthcoming
  • Wired hubs (located at each booth)
  • Kiosks
  • You should join the list below if you plan on bringing a computer, and want to connect to our intrAnet during the event.
  • There will be NO internet connectivity via PlayaNet, we feel that during the event, the internet can survive without us.
